Taylor Swift, Post Malone lead 2024 VMA nominees for MTV awards show in New York (2024)

The swirl of interest around all things Nashville and modern pop will not die down due to the nominations for 2024's MTV Video Music Awards.

The 2024 VMAs return to New York live from Long Island's UBS Arena on Sept. 10, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET / PT.

Acts familiar to Music City and its modern influence on cultures and genres country, pop and beyond — including Beyoncé, Tyler Childers, Hozier, Post Malone, Jelly Roll, Jessie Murph, Shaboozey, Taylor Swift and Morgan Wallen — were nominated.

Fans can currently vote for their favorites across 15 gender-neutral categories, including "Video of the Year," "Best Collaboration" and "Artist of the Year," by visiting vote.mtv.com through Aug. 30.

Voting for “Best New Artist” will remain active into the show on Sept. 10.

Who are the leading MTV VMA nominees?

Swift garnered ten nominations, while Malone earned nine to lead the entire field of nominees.

The "Tortured Poets Department" album vocalist aims to continue her record-breaking streak of "Video of the Year" wins. If her Malone collaboration "Fortnight" is victorious, she will break her record to become the only artist to ever three-peat and win five times in the category.

Ariana Grande, Eminem and Sabrina Carpenter (6 each); Megan Thee Stallion and SZA (5 each), plus LISA, Olivia Rodrigo and Teddy Swims (4 each) join Swift and Malone as leading nominees.

Benson Boone and Tyla (3 each), Chappell Roan, Rauw Alejandro, Sexyy Red and Victoria Monét (2 each) also received multiple nods. Other first-time nominees include Alexander Stewart, Burna Boy, Coco Jones, Flyana Boss, Gracie Abrams, Gunna, Joyner Lucas, Laufey, LE SSERAFIM, Lojay, Morgan Wallen, Myke Towers, NCT Dream, Pheelz, Playboi Carti, RAYE and The Warning.

'Fortnight'

Swift's Post Malone collaboration "Fortnight" achieved particularly impressive renown.

Unto itself, the song received eight nominations in the following categories:

  • Video Of The Year
  • Song Of The Year
  • Best Collaboration
  • Best Direction
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Editing
  • Best Visual Effects
  • Best Art Direction

The competitive voting for the Burger King-sponsored and vaunted "Video of the Year" Moonman trophy includes Ariana Grande's "we can't be friends (wait for your love)," Billie Eilish's "LUNCH," Doja Cat's "Paint The Town Red," Eminem's "Houdini" and SZA's "Snooze."

Swift's recent VMA history, can she attend the 2024 MTV VMAs?

Barring any unforeseen schedule changes, it appears that Swift can attend the Video Music Awards on Sept. 10.

The date falls directly between the latest international and domestic legs of her Eras Tour.

Aug. 20 finds her finishing a five-night run at London's Wembley Stadium, while she returns to the road on Oct. 18 at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium.

At present, National Football League game dates for her beau, All-Pro Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, also do not prove problematic for her attendance.

Chiefs training camp runs until Aug. 15. The Sept. 10 date falls between a Sept. 5 matchup between the Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens and a Sept. 15 Chiefs versus Cincinnati Bengals matchup.

At 2023's festivities, Swift — who went into the night with the most nominations — was, with nine wins (including artist of the year, best pop, song of the year and video of the year), the most-awarded artist of the evening. Notably too, NSYNC had a surprise reunion just in time to present her with an award for best pop song.

For the second year in a row, Swift won video of the year. Twelve months prior, she won for “All Too Well” (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version).

“This is unbelievable. The fact that this is a fan-voted award means so much to me. It's really felt like the adventure of a lifetime this past year. I cannot believe that it was a year ago at the VMAs that I announced the 'Midnights' album. All I have to say tonight is thank you," Swift added.

Post Malone's expanding influence

Post Malone's nominations as both a country and pop artist are notable.

Yes, he's been nominated eight times alongside Taylor Swift for "Fortnight."

However, his radio, sales and streaming-beloved Morgan Wallen duet "I Had Some Help" was also nominated for Best Collaboration alongside his work on "Fortnight," plus Drake, Sexyy Red and SZA' –'s “Rich Baby Daddy,“ GloRilla and Megan Thee Stallion's “Wanna Be,” Jessie Murph and Jelly Roll's "Wild Ones, plus Jung Kook and Latto's “Seven."
