It’s a fruity, rum-basedNew Orleans classicthat’s ready to have some fun. Careful, though, this co*cktail drinks like juice. So it can sneak up on you.

Mardis Gras, co*cktail hour, or summer vacay, the Hurricane co*cktail is the one to make.

What Is a Hurricane co*cktail?

The Hurricane co*cktail is a fruity, high-octane drink.

It has two types of rum with passion fruit, orange, and lime juices. A splash of grenadine and simple syrup are in there, too.

Wondering why all the rum? I have the answer to that. First, it’s delicious. Second, it’s the reason behind the beverage.

This famous New Orleans co*cktail was born in the 1940s. And it results from a surplus of rum.

The story goes that the famous Pat O’Brien’s bar found themselves with too much rum. So they did a little experimenting and came up with The Hurricane.

With so much juice and booze, it’s a party in a glass! So next time you feel like letting loose, call up your pals and mix a round or two.

Ingredients

With a name like The Hurricane, you know this isn’t atwo-ingredient co*cktail.

You will need plenty of rum, a handful of juices, and some co*cktail staples.

Here’s the list of everything:

  • Rum-Traditionally, this co*cktail calls for lightanddark rum. Each rum has a unique flavor that completes the drink.
  • Passion Fruit Juice-Sweet and sour, passion fruitjuice gives the co*cktail a lovely tropical flavor. If you can’t find it, use pineapple juice.
  • Orange Juice-Use fresh if you can. Otherwise, use a store-bought brand that’s not full of additives.
  • Lime Juice-Use freshly squeezed for a flavor enhancer.
  • Grenadine-Add a splash for color and sweetness.
  • Simple Syrup.-It’s optional, but I recommend it for a sweet beverage.
  • Orange Slice-Use an orange wheel half for a garnish.
  • Maraschino Cherry-Another fun garnish for this fabulous drink.

Tips and Tricks

Follow these helpful tips and tricks when making this drink:

  • Adjust the simple syrup. This ingredient is optional. Adjust it depending on your preference and the sweetness of the passion fruit. You can also skip it.
  • Fresh juice is the best juice.Always go for fresh-squeezed orange and lime juices. They make the co*cktail taste so much better than the store-bought stuff.
  • Shake well.Shake for at least 20 seconds. This chills, dilutes, and mixes the ingredients properly.
  • Use pulp-free juice.Nobody wants a chunky co*cktail! So, use pulp-free juices if you’re taking the store-bought route. Likewise, strain out the pulp if using fresh.
  • Try different garnishes.Garnish with a pineapple wedge or a sprig of mint for added tropical flair.
  • Pour it into a hurricane glass. The curvy glass is a classic touch! If you don’t have one, any tall glass will do.
  • Use a jigger. This handy bartending tool helps you pour the correct ratios. Use one so you don’t accidentally over-pour the rum.

Hurricane Drink Variations

Is The Hurricane your kind of drink? Then try these variations!

  • Mix up the juices.Pineapple, pomegranate, cranberry- try different mixes to see what you like.
  • Adjust its strength.Use only 1 ounce each of light and dark rum for a less stiff drink. For a potent drink, use 3 ounces of each.
  • Use honey syrup.Swap out the regular simple syrup for honey syrup as a natural sweetener. Just warm equal parts honey and water, then stir until dissolved.
  • Make it a mocktail.Leave out the rum and replace grenadine with cherry juice. Add sparkling water or club soda if you want to dilute it.
  • Try a frozen hurricane.Add all the ingredients to a blender with ice. Then blend until you reach a frozen, frosty consistency.
