The hurricane co*cktail is a fruity rum punch made famous in NewOrleans. The ultimate crowd-pleasing co*cktail recipe!
When I took a trip to visit New Orleans, I fell in love with the food, the culture, and of course, the infamous hurricane co*cktail! You know how much I enjoy hosting parties and get togethers, so I figured I would share with you all how I make this mardi gras co*cktail at home! Perfect for parties or when you want something fresh to relax on your own.
Ingredients
- Rum: Mixing light rum and dark rum blends the fresh and smoky-sweet flavors that pair wonderfully with the fresh fruit juices.
- Orange juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice adds a bright citrus and sweet taste.
- Passion fruit juice: Sweet and just a little sour that balances out with the sweet and sour flavors of the orange and lime juice.
- Lime juice: Citrusy like the orange juice, but bright and acidic with sour notes.
- Grenadine: Typically made from pomegranate juice, it adds sweetness and a great burst of color to the co*cktail.
How to Make New Orleans Hurricane co*cktail
To start your New Orleans Hurricane co*cktail, take a large pitcher and pour in the dark rum.
Then pour in the light rum.
Next add the orange juice.
And then pour in the passion fruit juice.
Finish by squeezing in the lime juice, and give everything a good stir. You could also make individual servings in a co*cktail shaker.
Then in glasses filled with ice, evenly distribute the rum mixture, and top each glass with the grenadine.
Garnish with fresh fruit, like lime or orange slices and maraschino cherries, then serve and enjoy your New Orleans Hurricane co*cktail!
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is New Orleans famous co*cktail?
The Hurricane co*cktail was made in New Orleans back in the 1940s and is one of the drinks its well known for. The classic hurricane co*cktail was made with just 3 simple ingredients of rum, passion fruit syrup, and lemon juice, but it has evolved to be the more fruity, bright version today.
Why is it called a hurricane co*cktail?
The drink was created during World War II at Pat O’Brien’s when there was a surplus of rum and not as much whiskey. The ‘hurricane’ in the name comes from the shape of the glass it’s usually served in, as it resembles a hurricane lamp.
Can I make a hurricane a mocktail?
Simply take out the rum! You could add a bit of club soda to make it fizzy if it’s to your taste, or add some simple syrup if you want it sweeter.
